Every career path offers an array of insights and experiences, and nursing is no different. Since our work takes up a large percentage of our waking lives, finding meaning in it can make it feel less like a chore and more like an opportunity for learning and personal growth.
allows us to work with patients across their lifespans, explore non-clinical roles, work in environments without any patient interaction, collaborate with an enormous cornucopia of colleagues, and have a vast diversity of professional experience. An Abundance of Experience
Even though the cliché of a nurse in scrubs working in a hospital may be a dominant image for many people when you say the word “nurse,” the abundance of opportunities available to those who choose nursing as a career can stray far from the acute care bedside.
With opportunities in research, academia, the armed forces, the pharmaceutical industry, and the freedom to pursue entrepreneurship and business, nurses have no reason to feel limited in their choices.
In entrepreneurship alone, nurses are starting home care and case management agencies, working as freelance writers, designing and marketing their medical products, and coming up with all sorts of other creative business ideas, many of which can be translated into six- or seven-figure incomes.
Nurses can get to know an enormously diverse range of people, including colleagues, patients and their families, and others who cross their paths. If a nurse wanted to do a sociological or anthropological study of humanity, they would have no shortage of case studies.
Since nursing is a career with excellent mobility, the potential for a wide range of experience is extremely high. And, of course, a nurse can always choose to further their education, including a master’s degree, PhD, or the Doctor of Nursing Practice designation.
When it comes to certifications, the range of possibilities is almost limitless. Stroke, oncology, trauma, pediatrics, and case management are only the tip of the iceberg; the learning potential is extraordinary.
It’s an embarrassment of riches, as the saying goes.
A Deep Dive
Nursing is, in essence, a deep dive into life as we know it. Death and dying are almost impossible to escape as a nurse, or at the very least, we’re exposed to a great deal of suffering along the way if our work involves any contact with patients.
When it comes to skills, nursing can teach us more physical and manual skills than we can ever possibly list. As nurses, we’re likely to learn phlebotomy and wound care. If we spend any time in oncology, we might administer chemotherapy and become specialists in the care of patients with cancer.
Have you ever noticed that nurses are often people who can figure stuff out and get things done, like the MacGyver character from movies and TV? Nurses are sometimes like skilled plumbers or electricians, and there’s no one like a nurse to calmly deal with the materials on hand and find a workaround when it’s needed.
Meanwhile, the intellectual side of nursing is equally impressive regarding what we need to know. The amount of information, expertise, and knowledge a nurse accumulates over many years in the profession is astounding.
As mentioned above, most nurses meet an astronomical number of people during their careers, which generally necessitates understanding how to communicate effectively while also developing advanced levels of emotional and relational intelligence.
The Bottomless Treasure Trove
Nursing can be a bottomless treasure trove of opportunity. There’s no shortage of roles a nurse can pursue, multiple educational pathways and certifications to consider, and a vast diversity of career paths that many other professionals lack access to and may envy.
The potential richness of the nursing experience cannot be overstated or denied. Those who embrace the journey have much to anticipate, enjoy, and learn along their chosen path as a nursing professional.
